Possible Causes

Tripped internal overload reset button, Tripped household circuit breaker, Faulty wall switch or air switch, Loose or damaged power cord connection at disposal

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Always turn off the circuit breaker feeding the disposal before touching wiring or the unit. Never put your hand into the disposer chamber.

  • Check the wall switch / air switch: Verify the switch is in good condition and the air switch (if used) clicks and actuates the control box. Test the outlet with another appliance if the disposal is cord-connected.
  • Reset the disposal: Turn off power. Locate the red reset button on the bottom of the InSinkErator unit. Press it firmly until it clicks. Restore power and test.
  • Check the circuit breaker: At the electrical panel, locate the breaker for the kitchen/disposal and reset it fully OFF then ON.
  • Inspect power cord and connections: For corded models, unplug and inspect the cord for damage. For hardwired models, with power off, remove the wiring cover on the bottom and verify wire nuts are tight and no burned wires are present.
  • If still dead: The internal overload or motor windings may be failed. At this point, replacement of the disposal or professional diagnosis is recommended.
