Impeller Lugs Stuck / Plate Spinning Without Agitation
Disposal is unusually quiet and appears to run, but food is not being ground or discharged
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Impeller lugs seized by corrosion, Food packed tightly around impellers, Long-term lack of use causing sticking
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker.
- Free impellers: From above, use a wooden dowel or spoon handle to gently push each impeller lug to ensure it swings freely. Do not use your hands.
- Rotate plate: Use the bottom hex socket to rotate the grind plate while moving the impellers to break free any sticking.
- Flush and test: Run water and test with a small amount of soft food. If grinding action returns, resume normal use.
- If impellers remain stuck: Internal corrosion may be severe. Replace the disposal.
