Possible Causes

Metal utensil dropped into disposal, Small screws, bottle caps, or glass in chamber, Loose impeller (swinging lug) striking grind ring, Broken internal component

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the switch and shut off the breaker. Never reach into the disposal with your hand.

  • Inspect the chamber: Shine a flashlight into the sink opening. Look for foreign objects around the impellers and grind ring.
  • Remove debris: Use long-nose pliers or tongs to carefully remove any metal, glass, or hard objects. Rotate the grind plate manually with a wooden spoon handle to expose hidden items.
  • Check impeller movement: With power off, gently push each impeller (swinging lug) to ensure it pivots freely on its rivet.
  • Test operation: Restore power, run water, and briefly turn on the disposal. If abnormal noise persists, internal damage may have occurred.
  • If noise continues: The grind ring or impeller assembly may be damaged or loose. Replacement of the disposal is typically required.
