InSinkErator
Discharge Elbow Gasket / Connection Leak
Disposal runs but water leaks from the side discharge elbow connection
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Loose discharge elbow screws, Deteriorated fiber or rubber gasket between elbow and disposal, Misaligned discharge pipe putting stress on elbow, Cracked discharge elbow
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power and do not run the disposal while the leak is present.
- Tighten fasteners: Use a screwdriver to snug the two or three screws that secure the discharge elbow to the disposal outlet. Do not overtighten.
- Inspect gasket: If leaking persists, remove the elbow and inspect the gasket. Replace with a new InSinkErator discharge elbow gasket if it is flattened, cracked, or missing.
- Align piping: Reinstall the elbow so that the connected drain piping lines up naturally without forcing the elbow up or down.
- Test for leaks: Run water with the disposal off first, then on, and observe the joint.
