Possible Causes
Overloading with fibrous or hard waste, Prolonged run time causing overheating, Partially jammed grind plate increasing motor load, Failing motor windings drawing excess current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off power at the switch and breaker before working on the unit.
- Clear the chamber: Remove any large or fibrous items (corn husks, celery, artichokes) with tongs. Avoid grinding large quantities at once.
- Free the grind plate: Use the bottom hex socket with the InSinkErator wrench to rotate the plate until it moves smoothly.
- Reset and test: Press the red reset button. Restore power, run cold water, and feed small amounts of food gradually.
- Check run time: Avoid running the disposal continuously for long periods with heavy loads. Allow cool-down if the housing feels hot.
- If overload still trips with light use: The motor may be failing. Replacement of the disposal is recommended rather than attempting motor repair.
