Possible Causes
Dried or cracked plumber's putty under sink flange, Loose mounting assembly, Corroded sink flange
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power and disconnect the disposal before removing mounting hardware.
Step-by-step:
- 1. Confirm leak location: Fill the sink with a few inches of water and observe under the sink. If water appears around the top of the KitchenAid disposal where it meets the sink, the flange seal is leaking.
- 2. Remove disposal: Support the unit from below, rotate the mounting ring counterclockwise to release the disposal from the sink flange, and set it aside.
- 3. Remove sink flange: From above, lift out the sink flange. Scrape away old plumber's putty or gasket material from the sink opening.
- 4. Re-seal flange: Roll a rope of fresh plumber's putty and apply it under the flange lip. Press the flange into the sink opening and reinstall the upper mounting hardware from below, tightening evenly.
- 5. Reinstall disposal: Reattach the KitchenAid disposal to the mounting ring, ensuring all three lugs lock securely. Reconnect plumbing and power, then test for leaks.
When to call a technician: If the sink itself is damaged or corroded around the drain opening, a professional may be needed to repair or replace the sink.
