Possible Causes
Hard object wedged in grind chamber, Overpacked food waste, Bent impeller preventing rotation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and breaker. Never attempt to free a jam with the power connected.
Step-by-step:
- 1. Remove visible debris: Use a flashlight and pliers to remove any large items from the KitchenAid disposal chamber.
- 2. Use jam-buster wrench: Insert the supplied wrench or a 1/4" Allen key into the bottom hex socket. Work it back and forth until the shaft rotates freely.
- 3. Rotate from above: Use a wooden dowel to push the impeller plate and confirm free movement.
- 4. Reset overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit until it clicks.
- 5. Test with water: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly turn on the disposal. If it still trips immediately, the motor may be damaged.
When to call a technician: If the jam cannot be cleared or the unit trips instantly after clearing, replacement is likely required.
