Possible Causes

Tripped GFCI outlet, Tripped circuit breaker, Faulty wall switch, Loose wiring in disposal junction box

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Always turn OFF the circuit breaker feeding the disposal before touching wiring or the unit. Never put your hand into the grinding chamber.

  • Step 1 – Check GFCI outlet: If the disposal is plugged into a GFCI receptacle under the sink, press the RESET button on the outlet. If it trips again immediately, unplug the disposal and leave it off.
  • Step 2 – Check home breaker: Go to your electrical panel and look for a tripped breaker labeled disposal or kitchen. Reset it fully OFF then back ON.
  • Step 3 – Test the wall switch: With power OFF at the breaker, remove the switch cover and verify that the wire connections are tight. If you have a non-contact voltage tester, restore power briefly and confirm that power reaches the switch and leaves the switch when turned ON. Replace a defective switch.
  • Step 4 – Inspect disposal wiring compartment: Turn the breaker OFF again. Remove the small metal cover plate on the bottom or side of the Kraus disposal where the power cable enters. Check that the wire nuts are tight and that no wires are burned or broken. Tighten as needed and reinstall the cover.
  • Step 5 – Test operation: Restore power at the breaker, run cold water, and flip the switch. If the unit is still completely dead, the internal control or motor windings may be open and the disposal should be replaced or inspected by a technician.
