Possible Causes
Loose discharge elbow screws or clamp, Damaged rubber discharge gasket, Cracked discharge elbow, Misaligned drain pipe putting stress on joint
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power to the disposal. Do not operate the unit while it is leaking.
- Step 1 – Identify leak point: Run water into the sink and observe the side of the disposal. Look for drips at the black discharge elbow connection.
- Step 2 – Tighten fasteners: Use a screwdriver to tighten the metal band clamp or mounting screws that secure the discharge elbow to the disposal outlet.
- Step 3 – Inspect gasket: If tightening does not stop the leak, remove the discharge elbow and inspect the rubber gasket. Replace the gasket if it is cracked, flattened, or missing.
- Step 4 – Check pipe alignment: Ensure the drain pipe and P-trap are aligned without forcing the elbow out of position. Adjust pipe lengths or fittings as needed.
- Step 5 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall the elbow with the new or existing gasket, tighten securely, then run water and check for leaks.
