Possible Causes
Weak motor capacitor (if equipped), Partially jammed impeller plate, Low line voltage, Failing motor windings
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the breaker before attempting any manual rotation or inspection.
- Step 1 – Free the impeller: Use the bottom hex socket with the Kraus jam-buster wrench to rotate the motor shaft back and forth until it moves freely.
- Step 2 – Clear chamber: Remove any debris from the grinding chamber using tongs.
- Step 3 – Check voltage (advanced): Have a qualified person verify that the outlet or hardwired circuit is supplying proper voltage (typically 120V in North America).
- Step 4 – Test operation: Restore power, run water, and try starting the disposal. If it still only clicks or needs multiple tries, the internal motor components are likely failing.
- Step 5 – Replace unit: Start capacitors and internal start mechanisms in sealed Kraus disposals are not user-serviceable. Replace the disposal if symptoms persist.
