Possible Causes
Foreign object jammed in grinding chamber, Jammed turntable or lugs, Seized motor shaft, Overloaded grinding chamber
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and shut OFF the circuit breaker. Never reach into the disposal with your bare hand.
- Step 1 – Press the red reset button: On most Kraus disposals, there is a red reset (overload protector) button on the bottom. Press it firmly until it clicks.
- Step 2 – Manually free the jam: Insert the supplied Kraus jam-buster wrench or a 1/4" Allen key into the hex socket on the bottom center of the motor shaft. Gently work it back and forth until it turns freely 360°.
- Step 3 – Remove foreign objects: From above, remove the splash guard/baffle. Use tongs or pliers (not your fingers) to remove bones, metal, glass, or other debris from the grinding chamber and around the impeller lugs.
- Step 4 – Test with water: Restore power at the breaker, run a strong stream of cold water, then turn the switch ON. If the unit still only hums, turn it OFF immediately to avoid burning out the motor.
- Step 5 – Evaluate motor: If the shaft will not turn freely with the wrench or the unit continues to hum only, the motor assembly is likely seized and the disposal should be replaced.
