Possible Causes
Food residue on grind ring and splash guard, Sludge buildup in discharge elbow and P-trap, Insufficient flushing with water, Grease accumulation
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the disposal before cleaning. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners.
- Step 1 – Clean splash guard: Remove the rubber splash guard and scrub both sides with hot, soapy water and a brush. This part often traps odors.
- Step 2 – Deodorize chamber: Pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar into the disposal. Let it foam for 5–10 minutes, then rinse with hot water.
- Step 3 – Ice and citrus cleaning: Fill the chamber with a handful of ice cubes and a few small lemon or orange peels. Run cold water and operate the disposal to scour the grind ring.
- Step 4 – Clean drain trap: If odors persist, remove and clean the P-trap and horizontal drain pipe under the sink to remove sludge.
- Step 5 – Prevent recurrence: Always run cold water for 15–30 seconds after grinding to flush debris through the drain.
