Possible Causes
Clogged cross-over pipe between bowls, Improperly installed baffle tee, Partial blockage in main drain, Insufficient fall in drain piping
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the disposal. Do not use chemical drain cleaners.
- Step 1 – Plunge opposite bowl: Use a sink plunger on the non-disposal bowl while blocking the disposal side with a stopper. Plunge vigorously to clear minor clogs.
- Step 2 – Clean cross-over and trap: Remove the cross-over pipe and P-trap under the sink. Clear any food buildup and reinstall.
- Step 3 – Check baffle tee orientation: Ensure the baffle tee (if used) is installed correctly so that discharge from the disposal flows toward the main drain, not into the other bowl.
- Step 4 – Test flow: Run water and operate the disposal briefly to confirm that water no longer backs up into the opposite bowl.
