Possible Causes
Overloading with hard food waste, Dull grinding components causing strain, Partial jam in grinding chamber, Failing motor windings overheating
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and keep hands out of the chamber.
- Step 1 – Allow motor to cool: If the disposal shut off mid-use, wait 5–10 minutes to allow the internal overload to cool.
- Step 2 – Press reset: Locate the red reset button on the bottom of the Kraus disposal and press it until it clicks.
- Step 3 – Clear chamber: Remove the splash guard and inspect the grinding chamber with a flashlight. Use tongs to remove fibrous foods, bones, or foreign objects that may be binding the impeller lugs.
- Step 4 – Run with water and small load: Turn on a strong stream of cold water and briefly run the disposal with a small amount of soft food to test. Avoid feeding large quantities at once.
- Step 5 – Check for chronic overheating: If the reset trips repeatedly with light use, the motor windings may be failing or the grinding components may be excessively worn, causing high load. In that case, replacement of the disposal is recommended.
