Possible Causes
Clogged discharge outlet on disposal, Knockout plug not removed from dishwasher inlet, Blocked sink trap (P-trap), Clogged drain line downstream of disposal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the disposal and wall switch. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in a disposal-equipped sink.
- Step 1 – Check for standing water: If the sink is full, bail out excess water into a bucket to reduce mess.
- Step 2 – Inspect discharge elbow: Under the sink, locate the black discharge elbow on the side of the Kraus disposal. Loosen the clamp or screws and remove the elbow. Check for packed food debris and clean it out.
- Step 3 – Verify dishwasher knockout: If a dishwasher drain hose is connected, remove the hose and confirm that the internal knockout plug in the disposal’s dishwasher inlet has been removed. If still present, carefully knock it out with a screwdriver and hammer, then remove the plastic disc from the chamber.
- Step 4 – Clean P-trap: Place a bucket under the sink trap. Loosen the slip nuts and remove the P-trap and adjacent pipes. Clear any sludge or food buildup, then reassemble.
- Step 5 – Flush system: Run cold water and briefly operate the disposal to confirm that water now drains freely.
