Possible Causes
Moisture intrusion into motor housing, Damaged power cord or wiring, Shorted motor windings, Water leak onto electrical connections
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the breaker and unplug the disposal if it uses a cord. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker or GFCI without inspection.
- Step 1 – Inspect for leaks: Check around the top mounting assembly and bottom of the Kraus disposal for signs of water leakage that could be reaching electrical components.
- Step 2 – Check power cord and plug: If your unit is corded, inspect the cord for cuts, crushed sections, or burn marks. Replace a damaged cord set immediately.
- Step 3 – Dry the area: If there is moisture under the sink, dry the cabinet and exterior of the disposal thoroughly. Allow the unit to air dry for several hours.
- Step 4 – Test on a different circuit (if corded): Temporarily plug the disposal into a known-good GFCI outlet on a different circuit using an appropriate extension cord. If it still trips instantly, the motor is likely shorted.
- Step 5 – Replace if shorted: Internal ground faults or shorted windings in the motor assembly are not serviceable. Replace the Kraus disposal if it continues to trip the breaker or GFCI.
