Possible Causes
Metal utensil dropped into chamber, Loose screws or hardware inside chamber, Broken glass pieces, Dislodged impeller lug
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and circuit breaker. Never reach into the disposal with bare hands, especially if glass may be present.
- Step 1 – Remove splash guard: Lift out the rubber splash guard/baffle from the sink opening to improve visibility.
- Step 2 – Inspect with flashlight: Shine a light into the grinding chamber and look for screws, bottle caps, glass, or utensils.
- Step 3 – Remove debris: Use long-nose pliers or tongs to carefully remove all foreign objects. Rotate the turntable manually (using a wooden spoon handle from above) to check for hidden items.
- Step 4 – Check impeller lugs: Verify that the two or more stainless-steel impeller lugs on the turntable move freely but are not broken off. If a lug is missing or severely damaged, the grinding plate assembly is compromised.
- Step 5 – Test operation: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly operate the disposal. If loud metallic noise persists with no foreign objects present, the internal grinding components may be damaged and the unit should be replaced.
