Possible Causes
Prolonged operation under heavy load, Jammed rotor causing stalled motor, Failing motor windings, Foreign object wedged in grinding plate
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Immediately turn OFF the wall switch and circuit breaker. Do not continue to run a smoking disposal.
- Step 1 – Allow cooling: Leave the unit powered OFF for at least 20–30 minutes to cool down.
- Step 2 – Clear jam: Use the Kraus jam-buster wrench or a 1/4" Allen key in the bottom hex socket to ensure the motor shaft turns freely. Remove any foreign objects from the chamber with tongs.
- Step 3 – Inspect for visible damage: Check under the sink for scorch marks, melted insulation, or a burnt odor near the motor housing.
- Step 4 – Test briefly: Restore power, run cold water, and test the disposal for only a few seconds. If the burning smell returns or the unit fails to reach normal speed, shut it off immediately.
- Step 5 – Replace if overheating persists: Persistent burning odor or visible smoke indicates internal motor damage. The motor assembly is not serviceable; replace the Kraus disposal.
