Possible Causes
Worn motor bearings, Misaligned rotor, Debris trapped between turntable and stationary grind ring, Corroded internal components
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the disposal before inspecting. Avoid running the unit for extended periods while it is squealing.
- Step 1 – Inspect chamber: Remove the splash guard and check for small metal fragments or debris lodged between the turntable and grind ring. Remove with pliers.
- Step 2 – Manual rotation: With power OFF, rotate the turntable using a wooden spoon handle. If it feels rough or binds at certain points, internal wear is likely.
- Step 3 – Short test: Run cold water and operate the disposal for a few seconds. If the squeal persists even when empty, the motor bearings or internal bushings are worn.
- Step 4 – Plan replacement: Bearing and rotor alignment issues are not field-serviceable on sealed Kraus disposals. Replace the unit to prevent complete seizure.
