Possible Causes

Food residue trapped under McAlpine splash guard, Sludge buildup in grinding chamber walls, Grease accumulation in McAlpine trap, Bacteria growth in standing water pockets

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power at the switch.

  • Clean splash guard: Remove the McAlpine rubber splash guard (if removable) and scrub both sides with hot soapy water. Replace if cracked or heavily stained.
  • Deodorise chamber: Pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar into the disposal, let it foam for 10–15 minutes, then flush with hot water while running the unit.
  • Grind ice and citrus: Run a handful of ice cubes and small citrus peels through the disposal with cold water to help scour the chamber.
  • Clean trap: If odour persists, remove and clean the McAlpine trap and nearby pipework.
