Possible Causes
Excessive load from fibrous food in grinding chamber, Partially seized McAlpine motor bearings, Shorted motor windings, Jammed impeller causing high current draw
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Isolate power at the breaker and ensure the wall switch is off.
- Clear the chamber: Remove any fibrous or stringy material (celery, onion skins, corn husks) using pliers. Avoid putting these items into the McAlpine disposal in future.
- Manually rotate the motor: Use the hex socket at the base (if provided) to rotate the motor shaft several full turns to ensure it moves freely.
- Reset the overload: Press the reset button on the underside of the unit until it clicks. Wait 5–10 minutes to allow the thermal protector to cool fully.
- Test with light load: Restore power, run cold water, and test with a very small quantity of soft food. If the unit trips again quickly, internal motor damage is likely.
Repeated overload trips indicate a failing motor or bearings. In that case, replacement of the motor assembly or complete McAlpine disposer is recommended.
