Possible Causes
Loose internal wire connection in McAlpine junction box, Failing internal centrifugal or start switch, Worn motor brushes (if brush-type), Faulty internal overload device
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Isolate power at the breaker before removing any covers.
- Inspect internal connections: Remove the lower access cover and check all spade terminals and screw terminals for tightness. Reseat any loose connectors.
- Check for heat damage: Look for discoloured or melted insulation around the internal switch or overload device. Replace damaged components if available as spares.
- Operate and observe: With covers refitted, restore power and run the unit while gently tapping the housing. If tapping causes it to stop or start, an internal switch is likely faulty.
Internal switch or overload faults usually require replacement of the motor assembly or complete McAlpine disposal, as these parts are often not user-serviceable.
