Possible Causes

Incorrectly installed McAlpine double bowl waste kit, Missing non-return valve in branch, Blocked main waste downstream of tee, Incorrect height of branch connections

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off power to the disposal. Do not operate it while pipework is disconnected.

  • Inspect the double bowl kit: Check the orientation of the McAlpine double bowl connector and ensure the disposal outlet is connected to the correct spigot.
  • Check for non-return valve: If specified, ensure a McAlpine non-return valve is fitted on the branch to the non-disposal bowl to prevent backflow.
  • Clear downstream blockage: Remove and clean the trap and horizontal waste pipe. A blockage after the tee will cause backflow into the other bowl.
  • Reassemble with correct fall: Ensure all horizontal runs have a slight downward slope towards the main drain.
