Possible Causes

Failed McAlpine shaft seal between grinding chamber and motor, Cracked internal chamber, Corroded motor housing around seal area, Overpressure from blocked outlet forcing water past seal

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Isolate power and place a container under the unit to catch drips. Do not continue to use a leaking disposal.

  • Rule out external leaks: Dry the unit and run water without operating the motor. If water appears only from the very bottom centre, the internal seal is leaking.
  • Check outlet and trap: Ensure the discharge elbow and trap are not blocked, as backpressure can worsen seal leaks.
  • Do not attempt internal seal replacement unless experienced: Replacing the shaft seal requires full disassembly of the McAlpine unit and is generally not economical for homeowners.

Internal leaks from the bottom of the housing almost always require replacement of the complete McAlpine disposal.
