Possible Causes

Worn internal overload contacts, Debris lodged around reset button, Heat-damaged overload device, Weak reset spring

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Isolate power before touching the reset mechanism.

  • Clean around reset button: Wipe away any grease or debris around the reset button on the underside of the McAlpine unit.
  • Operate reset several times: With power off, press the reset button repeatedly to free any sticking mechanism.
  • Test operation: Restore power and test. If the unit only runs when the button is held or after tapping, the overload device is failing.

A faulty overload/reset device is typically integrated into the motor assembly and requires replacement of the motor or complete disposal.
