Moen garbage disposal drains slowly or water backs up into the sink while running

Safety first: Turn off and unplug the disposal before disassembling any plumbing.

• Check for standing water:
  • If water stands in the sink, do not use chemical drain cleaners; they can damage components and create hazards.
• Inspect discharge elbow and trap:
  • Place a bucket under the P-trap.
  • Loosen the slip nuts and remove the P-trap and discharge elbow.
  • Clear any food sludge or obstructions.
• Check further down the line:
  • If the trap is clear, use a drain snake to clear the branch drain in the wall.
• Reassemble and test:
  • Reinstall the trap and elbow, ensuring gaskets are seated.
  • Run water and test the disposal.
• Inspect splash guard:
  • Ensure the Moen splash guard/baffle is seated correctly and not inverted or blocking the outlet.
