Possible Causes

Prolonged jam causing motor stall, Failing motor windings, Running disposal continuously for extended periods, Foreign material contacting motor housing

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Immediately turn off the wall switch and unplug the disposal or shut off the breaker. Do not continue to run a smoking or burning-smell disposal.

  • Allow cooling:
    • Let the unit cool for at least 20–30 minutes.
    • Press the reset button on the bottom after cooling.
  • Check for jams:
    • Use a jam-buster wrench in the bottom hex socket to free the jam plate.
    • Remove any obstructions from the grind chamber with tongs.
  • Re-test briefly:
    • Restore power and run water.
    • Turn the disposal on for only 1–2 seconds.
    • If the burning smell returns or the unit fails to start, the motor windings are likely damaged.
  • Do not continue using a burnt motor:
    • Replace the entire Moen disposal to prevent electrical hazards.
