Moen No Power / Overload Trip

Moen garbage disposal is completely dead (no hum, no sound) when switch is turned on

Possible Causes

Tripped internal overload protector, Tripped GFCI outlet, Faulty wall switch, Loose or damaged power cord connection at Moen disposal

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Ensure your hands are dry. Do not work on live wiring. If you are not comfortable with electrical checks, contact a qualified electrician or appliance technician.

  • Check power source:
    • Verify the disposal is plugged in to the under-sink outlet.
    • Press the reset button (red button on the bottom of most Moen disposals). If it clicks, the overload was tripped.
    • Check the GFCI outlet (if present). Press RESET on the GFCI receptacle.
    • Check the breaker panel for a tripped circuit breaker and reset if necessary.
  • Test the wall switch:
    • Plug a lamp or small appliance into the disposal outlet to confirm the outlet has power when the switch is ON (for switched outlets).
    • If the outlet never powers on, the wall switch or wiring may be faulty.
  • Inspect the power cord:
    • Unplug the disposal and inspect the Moen power cord kit (if used) for cuts, burns, or loose strain relief.
    • Replace the cord set if damaged.
  • Internal failure: If the unit has power at the outlet, the reset is not tripped, and there is still no hum or movement, the motor windings or internal wiring are likely failed. Replacement of the entire disposal is usually more economical than motor repair.
