Possible Causes
Failed internal shaft seal between grind chamber and motor, Corroded motor housing, Cracked lower casing from impact or freezing, Long-term rust from standing water inside Moen disposal
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the disposal or turn off the breaker. Do not operate a leaking disposal; water and electricity are a shock hazard.
- Confirm leak source:
- Dry the outside of the disposal.
- Place a dry paper towel under the motor housing.
- Run water in the sink (without running the disposal). If water drips from the bottom center or seams of the housing, the internal seal is compromised.
- Check external connections first:
- Verify the sink flange, dishwasher inlet, and drain elbow are not the source (these are higher up). If they are dry but the bottom is wet, the leak is internal.
- Internal leaks are not field-repairable:
- Moen disposals are factory-sealed; internal shaft seals and housings are not designed for user replacement.
- Remove the disposal from the mounting assembly and replace the entire unit.
- Install replacement:
- Follow Moen's installation instructions for the new disposal, using fresh plumber's putty at the sink flange and new gaskets.
