Moen garbage disposal makes a loud rattling or clanking noise during operation

  • Use tongs to remove any small bones, bottle caps, or other debris.
• Check impeller play:
  • With power disconnected, gently move each impeller side to side.
  • They should pivot freely but not feel excessively loose or detached.
• Listen after clearing:
  • Restore power, run water, and test briefly.
  • If rattling continues with no debris, the impeller assembly or jam plate is likely worn.
• Replace unit if internal wear is severe:
  • Moen disposals are not designed for internal rebuild; replace the disposal if internal components are loose or broken.
