Possible Causes

Foreign object causing sudden jam, Motor capacitor failure, Internal winding short, Overload protector tripping under fault

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the wall switch and unplug the disposal or shut off the breaker. Do not repeatedly try to restart after a loud pop.

  • Check reset:
    • After 10–15 minutes, press the reset button on the bottom of the Moen disposal.
  • Inspect for jams:
    • Use a jam-buster wrench to rotate the jam plate.
    • Remove any foreign objects from the grind chamber with tongs.
  • Test briefly:
    • Restore power and run water.
    • Turn on the disposal for 1–2 seconds.
    • If it fails to start or trips again, the internal capacitor or windings are likely damaged.
  • Replace unit:
    • Internal electrical components in Moen disposals are not user-serviceable; replace the disposal.
