Possible Causes
Overloading with hard food waste, Running without sufficient water flow, Partially jammed impellers increasing motor load, Failing motor windings drawing excessive current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the wall switch and unplug the disposal or turn off the breaker before inspecting the unit.
- Allow motor to cool:
- Wait 10–15 minutes for the internal overload to cool.
- Press the reset button on the bottom of the Moen disposal until it clicks.
- Check for partial jams:
- Use a jam-buster wrench or 1/4" Allen key in the bottom hex socket to rotate the jam plate back and forth.
- Remove any debris from the grind chamber using tongs (never hands).
- Use proper operating technique:
- Always run cold water before, during, and for 15–30 seconds after grinding.
- Avoid large quantities of fibrous foods (celery, corn husks), starchy pastes (large amounts of potato peels), or non-food items.
- Monitor load:
- If the reset trips even with light loads and clear chamber, the motor assembly is likely failing.
- In that case, replacement of the disposal is recommended.
