Project Source
Impeller Jam / Rotor Stalled
Garbage disposal hums but does not spin; no grinding action when wall switch is turned on

Possible Causes
Foreign object jammed in grinding chamber, Jammed impellers on turntable, Seized motor shaft, Bent shredder ring or plate
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the disposal before working on it. Never put your hand into the disposal while it is connected to power.
- Check for jam: Shine a flashlight into the Project Source disposal through the sink opening. Look for bones, metal, glass, or fibrous food wrapped around the impellers.
- Use an offset wrench: Insert a 1/4" hex (Allen) wrench into the hex socket at the bottom center of the disposal motor (most Project Source units have this). Turn the wrench back and forth firmly to free the jammed rotor.
- Use a wooden tool from above: From the sink opening, use a wooden spoon handle or dowel to push the impellers on the turntable back and forth until they move freely.
- Remove debris: With power still OFF, use tongs or pliers to remove any foreign objects from the grinding chamber.
- Reset and test: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal housing. Restore power and briefly run cold water, then turn the switch on to test.
If the unit still only hums and quickly trips the reset, the motor may be seized and the disposal will likely need replacement.
