Garbage disposal hums when switched on but the grinding plate does not turn.

Possible Causes
Foreign object jammed in grinding chamber, seized impeller plate, bent shredder ring, motor rotor locked due to rust or debris
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Switch off power at the breaker and verify the unit cannot start. Never put your hand into the disposal while it is connected to power.
- Use the supplied hex key: Many Rangemaster disposals have a hex (Allen) socket in the centre of the base. Insert the correct hex key and work it back and forth to free the impeller plate. Do not use excessive force that could crack the housing.
- Remove foreign objects: From above, use long-nose pliers or tongs and a torch to remove bones, cutlery, bottle caps, or other obstructions from the grinding chamber. Do not use your fingers.
- Flush with water: After freeing the plate, run cold water and briefly turn the unit on and off in short bursts to clear remaining debris.
- Check for repeated jamming: If the unit jams again immediately, the shredder ring or impeller lugs may be bent or damaged. Continued use can burn out the motor; consider replacing the grinding chamber assembly or the entire disposal.
