Foreign Object in Grinding Chamber
Garbage disposal makes a loud metallic grinding or rattling noise during operation.

Possible Causes
Metal cutlery dropped into chamber, small screws or bottle caps, broken glass fragments, loose impeller lug on impeller plate
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the wall switch and isolate power at the breaker. Confirm the unit cannot start.
- Visual inspection: Shine a torch into the sink opening. Look for foreign objects resting on the shredder ring or between impeller lugs.
- Remove objects: Use long-nose pliers, tongs, or a magnetic pickup tool to remove metal items. Never insert your hand into the disposal.
- Check impeller lugs: Gently move the impeller lugs with a wooden spoon handle. They should pivot freely but not be loose or detached. If a lug is broken or missing, the grinding plate assembly should be replaced.
- Test run: After clearing, run cold water and briefly operate the unit. If the metallic noise persists, the shredder ring may be damaged or misaligned and continued use can damage the motor.
