Possible Causes
Prolonged stalling under load, jammed rotor, failing motor windings, blocked ventilation around Rangemaster motor housing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately switch off the disposal and isolate power. Do not continue to run a smoking or burning-smell motor.
- Allow to cool: Let the unit cool for at least 30 minutes. Do not reset or restart until it is cool to the touch.
- Check for jams: Use the base hex socket to ensure the impeller plate rotates freely. Remove any obstructions from the chamber.
- Inspect for visible damage: Look for scorch marks, melted plastic, or discolouration on the bottom of the motor housing.
- Test briefly: After cooling and clearing, restore power and run for only a few seconds with water. If the burning smell returns or the unit hums without turning, disconnect and discontinue use.
- Replacement recommended: A motor that has overheated to the point of a strong burning smell is usually beyond economical repair and should be replaced.
