Possible Causes

Worn upper or lower motor bearings, dry shaft seal, misaligned rotor shaft, debris caught between rotor and stator

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Switch off power and do not continue to run a squealing motor; this can lead to seizure.

  • Check for simple obstructions: Inspect the grinding chamber for metal fragments or hard debris that might be rubbing. Remove with pliers.
  • Short test: After clearing, run the unit for a few seconds with water. If the squeal remains, the noise is likely from internal bearings.
  • No user-serviceable bearings: Rangemaster disposal bearings are sealed within the motor assembly and cannot be lubricated or replaced individually in normal domestic models.
  • Plan replacement: Continued use can cause the motor to seize and trip breakers. Schedule replacement of the disposal at the earliest convenience.
