Garbage disposal produces a foul odour even after running with water.

Possible Causes

Grease and food residue on splash guard, sludge in grinding chamber, biofilm in discharge pipe, insufficient flushing with cold water

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the disposal before cleaning. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners inside the unit.

  • Clean splash guard: Remove the rubber splash guard (baffle) from the sink opening if it is removable. Scrub both sides with hot soapy water and a brush to remove grease.
  • Deodorise chamber: Pour a mixture of baking soda and white vinegar into the disposal. Allow it to foam for 10–15 minutes, then flush with hot water.
  • Ice and citrus clean: With cold water running, feed a tray of ice cubes and a few small pieces of lemon or orange peel into the disposal. Briefly run to scour the chamber.
  • Clean discharge pipe: If odour persists, remove and clean the P-trap and horizontal waste pipe to clear sludge.
  • Regular maintenance: Run cold water for 20–30 seconds after each use to flush waste fully through the Rangemaster disposal and pipework.
