Possible Causes
Overloading with fibrous or dense food waste, Prolonged continuous run time, Restricted water flow causing overheating, Failing motor windings increasing current draw
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Switch off the wall switch and turn off the circuit breaker before touching the unit.
- Allow cooling time: Leave the disposal OFF for at least 20–30 minutes to allow the internal thermal protector to reset.
- Reduce load: From the sink opening, use tongs to remove excess food waste or fibrous material (celery, corn husks, onion skins) that may be packed inside the grinding chamber.
- Run cold water: After clearing, run a strong stream of cold water for 1–2 minutes to flush remaining debris.
- Restore power and test: Turn the breaker back on, then the wall switch. Run water and briefly operate the disposal with a small load. If it trips again quickly, the motor windings or thermal protector are likely failing.
- Prevent recurrence: Feed waste slowly, avoid fibrous materials, and always run cold water before, during, and after use.
- If repeated trips occur: Plan for replacement of the motor/disposal assembly, as the internal thermal protector is not serviceable separately on most Reginox models.
