Possible Causes

Shorted motor windings, Moisture intrusion into motor housing, Damaged power cord insulation, Loose or shorted wiring in junction box

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the breaker and verify power is off. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips immediately.

  • Inspect for moisture: Check under the sink for leaks from the sink flange, dishwasher inlet, or discharge elbow dripping onto the Reginox motor housing or junction box. Repair any leaks before proceeding.
  • Check the power cord and wiring: Look for cuts, crushed sections, or burn marks on the cord. Open the junction box cover and inspect wire nuts and insulation for signs of arcing.
  • Dry the area: If moisture is present on the housing or wiring, dry thoroughly and allow several hours for internal components to dry. Do not use heaters directly on the unit.
  • Test with no load: After drying and correcting leaks, restore power and briefly test the disposal with no food load. If the breaker still trips, the motor windings are likely shorted.
  • Do not bypass protection: Never replace a breaker with a higher rating or bypass a GFCI. If faults persist, the disposal assembly should be replaced.
