Possible Causes
Food residue stuck under splash guard, Grease and fat coating chamber walls, Buildup in discharge pipe and trap, Infrequent flushing with water
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the disposal at the switch before cleaning. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners.
- Step 1 – Clean splash guard: Remove the rubber splash guard (if removable) and scrub both sides with hot soapy water and a brush. For fixed guards, scrub in place with a long-handled brush.
- Step 2 – Clean chamber: Pour a mixture of hot water and mild detergent into the disposal. Use a disposal-safe brush to scrub the inside walls and underside of the splash guard.
- Step 3 – Deodorize naturally: Grind a few ice cubes and small pieces of lemon or orange peel with cold water running. This helps remove residue from the grinding components.
- Step 4 – Flush the drain: Run hot water for several minutes to flush the trap and horizontal drain line.
- Step 5 – Prevent recurrence: Avoid putting large amounts of grease or fibrous waste into the disposal and always run water for 20–30 seconds after grinding.
