Possible Causes
Partially jammed grinding plate, Worn motor bearings, Shorted motor windings, Excessive load from hard objects
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the unit before inspection.
- Step 1 – Check for partial jam: Use the jam-buster wrench on the bottom shaft to rotate the motor both directions. It should spin smoothly without tight spots.
- Step 2 – Inspect grinding chamber: With a flashlight, look for coins, screws, bones, or other hard items. Remove them with pliers or tongs.
- Step 3 – Test with light load: Restore power, run cold water, and test with a small amount of soft food. If the unit still stops and shows E04, internal motor issues are likely.
- Step 4 – Listen for bearing noise: Grinding or squealing sounds indicate worn motor bearings causing overload. This is not user-repairable.
If E04 persists after clearing all obstructions, the motor assembly is likely failing and the safest solution is to replace the Tweeny disposal.
