Possible Causes
Prolonged overload operation, Shorted motor windings, Seized or partially seized rotor, Blocked cooling vents
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Immediately switch OFF the disposal and disconnect power if you smell burning.
- Step 1 – Do not restart: Allow the unit to cool completely. Do not repeatedly try to start a smoking or burning-smell motor.
- Step 2 – Check for jams: With power OFF, use the jam-buster wrench to ensure the rotor spins freely.
- Step 3 – Inspect vents: Clean dust and debris from around the motor housing and vents to improve cooling.
- Step 4 – Evaluate condition: If the smell persists or the unit trips the reset immediately, the motor windings are likely damaged.
Burned motors are not economical to repair on Tweeny disposals. Replace the entire unit to avoid fire risk.
