Possible Causes

Impeller jammed by foreign object, Seized motor bearings in Waste King grinding chamber, Overloaded with fibrous food waste, Faulty internal overload protector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and the circuit breaker. Never reach into the disposal with your hand.

  • Step 1 – Press the red reset button: Locate the red reset button on the bottom of the Waste King unit. Press it firmly until it clicks. If it immediately trips again when you try to run the unit, continue to the next steps.
  • Step 2 – Manually free the jam: Insert the supplied jam-buster wrench (or a 1/4" Allen key on compatible models) into the hex socket on the bottom center of the motor. Rotate the wrench back and forth until it moves freely. This turns the turntable and impellers to clear jams.
  • Step 3 – Clear foreign objects from the top: With power still OFF, use tongs or pliers from the sink opening to remove bones, utensils, or other hard items. Do not use your fingers.
  • Step 4 – Reset and test: Press the red reset button again. Restore power at the breaker and briefly turn on the wall switch with cold water running. If the unit runs smoothly, the fault is cleared.
  • Step 5 – If humming persists: If the motor still only hums and trips, the motor bearings or overload protector may be failing. At this point, replacement of the disposal is usually more economical than motor repair.
