Waste King
Thermal Overload Trip
Garbage disposal stops mid-run and will not restart for several minutes; smart controller logs E3 thermal event.

Possible Causes
Running disposal for extended periods, Overloading with dense waste causing high current draw, Restricted cooling due to debris around motor housing, Weak internal thermal overload switch
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch. Do not repeatedly cycle power when the unit is hot.
- Step 1 – Allow cooling time: Turn off the disposal and leave it OFF for at least 20–30 minutes to allow the internal thermal overload to reset.
- Step 2 – Press red reset button: After cooling, press the red reset button on the bottom of the Waste King unit until it clicks.
- Step 3 – Inspect for overload conditions: Check that you are not grinding large quantities of fibrous foods (celery, corn husks), starchy foods (potato peels), or non-food items. These can cause high load and overheating.
- Step 4 – Improve ventilation: Ensure the area under the sink is not packed tightly around the disposal. Leave some space around the motor housing for air circulation.
- Step 5 – Test operation: Run cold water, then briefly turn on the disposal. If it trips again quickly, the thermal overload switch or motor windings may be failing, and the disposal should be replaced.
