Possible Causes
Failed wall switch contacts, Faulty air switch button or air switch module, Loose low-voltage control wiring to smart controller, Internal control board failure in Waste King unit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker before working on switches or wiring.
- Step 1 – Verify outlet power: Plug a lamp or small appliance into the disposal outlet under the sink. If it works, the outlet is good and the issue is with the switch or control.
- Step 2 – Test wall switch: Remove the wall switch cover plate. With power OFF, inspect for loose wires. Tighten terminal screws. If the switch feels loose or burned, replace it with a new single-pole switch rated for 15A or 20A as appropriate.
- Step 3 – Check air switch (if equipped): For Waste King units using an air switch, ensure the air tubing is firmly connected and not kinked. Verify the air switch module is plugged into a live outlet. Replace the air switch button or module if no click or response is felt.
- Step 4 – Inspect control wiring: If using a smart controller, check the low-voltage control wires for secure connections and no damage.
- Step 5 – If still no response: If power is present at the outlet and switch, but the disposal remains dead and E5 persists, the internal control board or motor assembly is likely failed and the disposal should be replaced.
