Possible Causes

Failed lower shaft seal in Waste King grinding chamber, Corroded motor housing, Cracked grinding chamber wall, Prolonged leakage from sink flange damaging internal seals

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and unplug the disposal if it uses a cord. Do not operate a leaking disposal due to risk of electrical shock.

  • Step 1 – Confirm leak source: Dry the area under the sink. Place paper towels under the disposal. Run water into the sink without operating the unit and observe where water appears.
  • Step 2 – Identify bottom housing leak: If water drips from the bottom of the motor housing or through the electrical compartment, the internal seals are compromised.
  • Step 3 – Do not attempt internal seal repair: Waste King disposals are factory-sealed; internal shaft seals and chamber walls are not user-serviceable.
  • Step 4 – Remove and replace unit: Disconnect the power cord or wiring, loosen the discharge elbow, and release the mounting assembly. Install a new Waste King disposal following the manufacturer’s instructions, using new gaskets and plumber’s putty at the sink flange.
  • Step 5 – Test for leaks: After installation, run water and check all joints (sink flange, discharge elbow, dishwasher inlet) for leaks.
