Possible Causes
Food residue stuck under splash guard, Sludge buildup on grinding ring and turntable, Grease accumulation in discharge elbow and P-trap, Infrequent flushing with water
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the disposal before cleaning. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners.
- Step 1 – Clean splash guard: Remove the rubber splash guard/baffle (on EZ-Mount models) and scrub both sides with hot, soapy water and a brush. This area often traps food particles.
- Step 2 – Clean grinding chamber: With the power OFF, use a long-handled brush to scrub the inside of the grinding chamber with a mixture of baking soda and dish soap.
- Step 3 – Deodorize: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the disposal, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Allow it to foam for 5–10 minutes, then flush with hot water.
- Step 4 – Ice and citrus treatment: Fill the disposal with ice cubes and a few small pieces of lemon or orange peel. Run cold water and briefly operate the disposal to help scour the grinding components.
- Step 5 – Maintain regularly: Run the disposal with cold water for 20–30 seconds after each use to clear food particles and prevent odors.
