Possible Causes
Loose slip nut on discharge elbow, Damaged rubber discharge gasket, Misaligned drain pipe, Cracked discharge elbow
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power and avoid using the sink until the leak is corrected.
- Step 1 – Locate leak: Dry the area and run water into the sink. Observe the joint where the discharge elbow attaches to the disposal and where it connects to the drain trap.
- Step 2 – Tighten slip nuts: Hand-tighten the slip nuts on the discharge elbow and P-trap. Use pliers for a slight additional turn if needed, but do not overtighten plastic fittings.
- Step 3 – Inspect gasket: If leaking persists at the disposal outlet, remove the elbow and inspect the rubber discharge gasket. Replace if flattened, cracked, or missing.
- Step 4 – Check for cracks: Examine the elbow and adjacent pipes for cracks. Replace any damaged sections.
- Step 5 – Reassemble and test: Reinstall the elbow with the new gasket, align the pipes properly, and test with running water.
