Possible Causes
Worn impeller pivot pins, Broken or bent impeller, Foreign debris trapped under impeller, Warped turntable
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker. Do not operate the unit while it is making severe rattling noises.
- Step 1 – Inspect impellers: With a flashlight, look into the disposal. Use a wooden spoon to gently move the swivel impellers. They should pivot but not feel excessively loose.
- Step 2 – Remove debris: Use tongs to remove any debris lodged around the impellers or grinding ring.
- Step 3 – Manual rotation: Use the jam-buster wrench on the bottom hex to rotate the turntable and feel for rough spots or binding.
- Step 4 – Evaluate wear: If an impeller appears broken, severely worn, or the turntable is warped, these components are not user-replaceable on most Waste King models.
- Step 5 – Replace disposal if needed: Continued operation with damaged impellers can cause leaks and further damage. Replace the disposal unit.
